Narooma is a coastal town on the NSW South Coast, situated on a narrow headland between the calm waters of Wagonga Inlet and the Tasman Sea. It is the main commercial and service centre of the region and home to Narooma Central School — a combined public school and high school serving students from across the Eurobodalla Shire’s southern communities.
The town is best known for Montague Island (Barunguba), an offshore nature reserve just 9km from the mainland that is home to one of the largest Australian fur seal colonies on the east coast, little penguins, and a spectacular array of seabirds. The island’s heritage lighthouse dates from 1881 and wildlife tours operate year-round. Narooma is also celebrated for its world-class oyster farming on Wagonga Inlet, dramatic coastal geology including the naturally formed Australia Rock — a sea-eroded arch in the unmistakable shape of the continent — and the Narooma Golf Course, widely regarded as one of the most scenic golf courses in Australia, perched above the cliffs overlooking Bar Beach and the Pacific Ocean. The town is a popular base for whale watching during the annual humpback migration, offshore fishing, kayaking on the inlet, and diving around Montague Island.
