Akolele

Akolele is a small rural locality on the western shores of Wallaga Lake, within the Bega Valley region of the NSW South Coast. It sits within the Wallaga Lake National Park corridor, surrounded by coastal heath, scribbly gum woodland, and the calm waters of the lake system. The area is sparsely populated and characterised by its peaceful, natural setting — with the lake providing habitat for migratory and resident waterbirds, and bush tracks threading through the surrounding national park.

Wallaga Lake, which borders the Akolele locality, is one of the largest and most ecologically significant coastal lakes on the NSW South Coast. It has deep cultural importance to the Yuin people, with the Wallaga Lake Aboriginal community located nearby at Wallaga Lake. The lake and its surrounding lands carry a long history of Aboriginal occupation and remain an active part of Yuin cultural life today.
