Give Way to Buses sign

What This Sign Means

If you are behind a bus displaying this sign and it is indicating to pull out — you must give way. The bus has priority. You are required to slow down or stop to allow it to enter the flow of traffic.

The Give Way to Buses sign is a legal requirement under NSW Road Rule 77. It applies in built-up areas where buses need to re-enter traffic from the kerb, a bus stop, or a bus-stop bay.

When Does the Rule Apply?

All three conditions must be present for the rule to apply:

🚏
The bus is stopped or moving slowly at the far left side of the road, on a shoulder, or in a bus-stop bay.
🪧
The bus is displaying the Give Way to Buses sign and has its right indicator operating.
🚗
The bus is about to enter or proceed in the lane or line of traffic you are driving in.

Who Must Give Way?

The rule applies to drivers in the left lane or left line of traffic who are behind the bus. If you are in a right-hand lane or already past the bus, the give way obligation does not apply to you.

This rule only applies in built-up areas — typically where the speed limit is 70 km/h or below. It does not apply on open highways or rural roads.

The Bus Driver’s Obligation

Bus drivers are also required to play their part. Before pulling out from a stationary position at the kerb, a bus driver must indicate for a minimum of five seconds. This gives drivers behind them sufficient warning and time to slow down safely.
